Panchakarma treatment in Delhi has become popular with people who want a deeper reset than a weekend detox can give. But the word is often used loosely, and many people are not sure what a real Panchakarma programme involves.
This guide explains the classical idea behind Panchakarma, the therapies you are likely to meet, how long it takes, and how we plan it at Arogyam Sutra in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.
What Panchakarma means
"Pancha" means five and "karma" means action. In Ayurveda, Panchakarma refers to five cleansing procedures used to remove accumulated imbalances (doshas) from the body. In practice, a programme has three stages:
- Purvakarma (preparation): gentle internal and external oiling, steam and a light diet that prepare the body.
- Pradhanakarma (main procedure): the cleansing procedures chosen for you.
- Paschatkarma (recovery): a slow return to normal food and routine so the body settles.
Skipping preparation or recovery is the most common reason people feel worse rather than better, so a good clinic never rushes these steps.
Therapies you may come across
Not every person receives every therapy. Your practitioner chooses and sequences them after a consultation. Common ones include:
| Therapy | What it involves | Often chosen for |
|---|---|---|
| Abhyanga | Full-body warm herbal oil massage | Stiffness, fatigue, dry skin |
| Swedana | Herbal steam after oiling | Opening channels, relaxation |
| Shirodhara | A steady stream of warm oil on the forehead | Stress, poor sleep |
| Kati Vasti | Warm oil pooled on the lower back | Lower back discomfort |
| Janu Vasti | Warm oil pooled on the knees | Knee stiffness |
| Greeva Vasti | Warm oil pooled on the neck | Neck and shoulder strain |
| Udwartana | Dry herbal powder massage | Weight balance, sluggishness |
| Vamana | Therapeutic emesis (a main procedure) | Selected cases, under supervision |

How long does Panchakarma take?
There is no single answer. As a rough guide:
- Short programmes (7 days) focus on oiling, steam and one or two targeted therapies.
- Standard programmes (14 days) allow proper preparation, a main procedure and recovery.
- Longer programmes (21 days or more) suit people with long-standing concerns who can step away from busy routines.
If you cannot take time off, we can plan sessions around work. For a more immersive experience, ask about our residential and IPD programmes.
Who should be careful
Panchakarma is powerful and not suitable for everyone at every time. Please speak to us and to your doctor first if you are pregnant, recovering from surgery, have a heart condition, very low weight, an active infection or fever, or are elderly and frail. A responsible clinic will screen you and may advise you to wait.
Life after Panchakarma
The weeks after a programme are a good time to build habits that last. Many people continue with yoga therapy, follow a simple Ayurvedic daily routine and take up gentle breathing practices.
