About this therapy
Hydrocolon therapy (colon hydrotherapy) is a naturopathic procedure in which the colon is gently irrigated with water under controlled conditions.
Suitability is assessed at consultation, and the therapy is usually considered as part of a wider plan that includes diet and lifestyle guidance.
What to expect
- Suitability assessed at consultation
- Combined with dietary guidance
- Carried out under supervision
What is hydrocolon therapy?
Hydrocolon therapy, also called colon hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation, is a procedure in which warm, filtered water is gently passed into the large intestine (colon) through a small, single-use tube in the rectum, and then allowed to flow out again, carrying loosened stool with it. It is a modern form of the much older naturopathic practice of the enema.
At Arogyam Sutra it is offered as one part of digestive and metabolic wellness care, which always starts with diet, water intake, activity and bowel-habit guidance. Hydrocolon therapy is never the whole plan.
Digestive care beyond the therapy
Many everyday digestive complaints, such as irregular bowel habits, hard stools, bloating and heaviness after meals, are strongly linked to routine. Your consultant will usually look at:
- fibre from vegetables, fruit, whole grains and pulses;
- how much water you drink through the day;
- meal timing, late dinners and eating in a hurry;
- physical activity and long hours of sitting;
- sleep, stress and the habit of ignoring the urge to pass stool.
Yoga practices traditionally used for digestion, abdominal massage, packs and hip baths may also be suggested.
What happens in a session
- Your suitability is checked first. The therapist asks about your medical history, medicines and bowel habits, and you can ask any questions.
- You change into a gown in a private room and lie on your side, then on your back.
- A lubricated, disposable nozzle is inserted a short way into the rectum; in standard practice it is single-use.
- Warm water flows in slowly at low pressure and drains out through a closed tube, so it is not messy. The therapist may massage the abdomen gently.
- Afterwards you can use the toilet, rest and drink water before going home.
Most people describe a feeling of fullness or mild cramping during the session. Tell the therapist at once if you feel pain, dizziness or discomfort, and the session can be paused or stopped.
When to see a doctor first
Hydrocolon therapy is not a way to investigate bowel symptoms. Please see a doctor before booking if you notice blood in your stool, black stools, a lasting change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss, severe or persistent abdominal pain, or constipation that started suddenly in later life.
What the research says
Mainstream medical bodies are cautious about colon cleansing. The Mayo Clinic explains that the body's digestive system already removes waste naturally, that there is little good evidence of benefit, and that side effects can include cramping, nausea, dehydration, imbalances in body salts and, rarely, bowel injury. That is why suitability is assessed carefully, single-use equipment is used, and the therapy is offered only as part of a wider plan focused on diet and habits.

Frequently asked questions
Is hydrocolon therapy painful?
Most people feel fullness or mild cramping rather than pain. The water flow is gentle and the therapist can slow down, pause or stop at any time if you are uncomfortable.
Is colon hydrotherapy safe?
When the person is suitable and the procedure uses single-use equipment and trained staff, it is generally well tolerated. It is not risk-free: side effects can include cramping, nausea and dehydration, and it is not suitable for people with certain bowel, heart or kidney conditions or during pregnancy. That is why suitability is checked first.
How should I prepare?
Eat a light meal a few hours before, drink water through the day and bring a list of your medicines. Your therapist will give specific instructions when you book.
Is hydrocolon therapy a treatment for constipation?
It is not a substitute for medical treatment. For ongoing constipation, the most important steps are usually fibre, water, activity and a regular toilet routine. Please see a doctor about any lasting change in bowel habit or warning signs such as bleeding.
How many sessions are recommended?
This is decided at consultation. Many plans use hydrocolon therapy sparingly, if at all, and focus mainly on diet and daily habits.
