About this therapy
Yoga therapy adapts postures (asana), breathing practices (pranayama) and relaxation to the individual, rather than following a one-size-fits-all class.
Your practice is shaped around your consultation, with modifications for mobility, comfort and any conditions you share with the team.
What to expect
- Individually adapted asana and pranayama
- Relaxation and breath work
- Guidance for safe home practice
What is yoga therapy?
Yoga therapy is yoga adapted to the person in front of the teacher. Instead of following the same sequence as everyone else in a class, your practice is chosen around your body, health history, energy and goals. It uses the same tools as traditional yoga:
- Asana. Postures, with props and modifications where needed.
- Pranayama. Breathing practices to steady the breath and calm the mind.
- Relaxation. Practices such as shavasana and yoga nidra.
- Meditation and awareness. Simple techniques to notice tension and let it go.
- Lifestyle guidance. Daily routine, sleep and posture habits drawn from yoga philosophy.
How yoga therapy differs from a regular class
| Group class | Yoga therapy | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | A set sequence for the group | Your consultation and health history |
| Pace | Set by the class | Set by you, with modifications |
| Focus | General fitness and well-being | Your specific goals and comfort |
| Home practice | Optional | A short, personal practice to follow |
Your first session
The yoga therapist will ask about injuries, surgery, medical conditions, medicines and what you would like help with, then check how you move and breathe. Your first practice is usually gentle. Over time you build a short home routine, often 15 to 30 minutes, that you can do on your own.
Who may consider it
- People with stiffness, everyday back or neck discomfort, or reduced mobility.
- People living with long-term conditions who want a safe, adapted practice alongside medical care.
- Beginners, older adults and anyone who feels a regular class moves too fast.
- People looking for help with stress, breathing and sleep habits.
What the research says
NCCIH reports that yoga may help with low-back and neck pain, and may improve sleep, stress and balance, and that it is generally safe for healthy people when practised under a qualified instructor. As with any exercise, injuries can happen, so a practice adapted to you matters.

Frequently asked questions
I am not flexible. Can I do yoga therapy?
Yes. Flexibility is not needed to start. Postures are modified with props and chairs, and your practice is built around what feels comfortable for you.
Is yoga therapy one-to-one?
Yoga therapy is usually given individually or in very small groups so it can be adapted to you. Please ask the clinic about current formats.
Can yoga help with back pain?
Research suggests yoga may help some people with chronic low-back pain. Your therapist will adapt the practice to your back and stop anything that hurts. Serious or sudden back symptoms need a medical check first.
What should I wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing you can move in. Practise on an empty stomach or two to three hours after a meal.
Can I do yoga during pregnancy?
Gentle, adapted yoga can be suitable in pregnancy with your doctor's approval. Please tell the therapist, as many postures and breathing practices are changed or avoided.
