What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapy in which very fine, solid, sterile needles are inserted through the skin at specific points on the body and left in place for a short time. It comes from traditional Chinese medicine, where the points are said to lie on channels (meridians) along which vital energy flows. Many modern practitioners also explain its effects through nerves, muscles and connective tissue.
What happens in a session
- Consultation. Your practitioner asks about your symptoms, health history, medicines and any bleeding problems.
- Positioning. You lie or sit comfortably. You may need to roll up sleeves or trousers, or change into a gown.
- Needling. A few to several needles are placed. You may feel a brief prick, then a dull ache, tingling or heaviness, which is common.
- Rest. Needles usually stay in for around 15 to 30 minutes while you relax.
- Removal. Needles are removed and safely disposed of. You can usually return to normal activities straight away.
At Arogyam Sutra, only single-use, sterile, disposable needles are used.
Who may consider it
- People with long-lasting back, neck or knee discomfort, alongside their medical care.
- People who get frequent tension-type headaches or migraines, after medical assessment.
- People who want a complementary option alongside yoga, diet and other therapies.
What the research says
NCCIH reports that acupuncture may help ease several types of pain that are often chronic, such as low-back pain, neck pain and osteoarthritis or knee pain, and may help reduce how often tension headaches happen and prevent migraine. Studies also show that people's expectations and the care around treatment play a part. Acupuncture is generally safe when done by a qualified practitioner.

Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are much thinner than injection needles. Most people feel a brief prick, then a dull ache or tingling. It should not be very painful; tell the practitioner if it is.
Are the needles reused?
No. Arogyam Sutra uses only single-use, sterile, disposable needles, which are thrown away safely after each session.
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
It depends on your concern and how you respond. Your practitioner will suggest a plan and review it with you. The clinic confirms fees before you start.
Can I have acupuncture during pregnancy?
Some practitioners offer acupuncture in pregnancy, but certain points are avoided. Please tell the clinic if you are or might be pregnant so suitability can be checked.
Is there anything to avoid after a session?
Most people carry on as normal. It helps to drink water, avoid very strenuous exercise or alcohol for the rest of the day, and rest if you feel light-headed.
