About high blood pressure
High blood pressure (hypertension) means the force of blood against the artery walls is too high. It often has no symptoms, which is why it is called a "silent" condition, yet over time it raises the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. The World Health Organization estimates that a large share of adults with hypertension do not know they have it. Regular checks are the only way to know.
Factors you can influence
- Too much salt, including from pickles, papad, packaged snacks and restaurant food.
- Excess weight and low physical activity.
- Alcohol and tobacco.
- Ongoing stress and poor sleep.
How a lifestyle plan may help
- Diet guidance. Less salt, more vegetables, fruit, pulses and whole grains, and fewer processed foods. See Naturopathy & Lifestyle Disorders.
- Gentle yoga. Calm, steady postures and relaxation. See Yoga Therapies.
- Slow breathing and meditation. Practices that support relaxation. See Meditation.
- Weight care. See Weight Management.
- Sleep and stress care. See Mental Well-Being & Sleep Care.
What the research says
Reducing salt, losing excess weight, regular physical activity and limiting alcohol all have strong evidence for lowering blood pressure. NCCIH reports that some studies suggest meditation and yoga may modestly lower blood pressure. Natural care at Arogyam Sutra is complementary. Please keep seeing your doctor, keep taking prescribed medicines, and tell the clinic about every medicine and supplement you take.

Frequently asked questions
Can yoga lower blood pressure?
Some studies suggest yoga, slow breathing and meditation may lower blood pressure modestly for some people. They are used alongside, not instead of, medical treatment.
Which breathing practices should I avoid?
Forceful practices such as rapid kapalbhati and bhastrika, and long breath-holding, are usually avoided with high blood pressure unless your doctor and teacher advise otherwise. Slow, gentle breathing is generally preferred.
Can I stop my BP tablets if my readings improve?
Never stop blood-pressure medicines on your own. If your readings improve, your doctor can decide whether to adjust them.
