About PCOS
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), often called PCOD in India, is a common hormonal condition in women of reproductive age. It can cause irregular or missed periods, excess facial or body hair, acne, thinning scalp hair, weight gain and difficulty getting pregnant. Many women with PCOS also have insulin resistance, which raises the risk of type 2 diabetes. PCOS is diagnosed by a doctor, usually with blood tests and sometimes an ultrasound.
Lifestyle matters in PCOS
The NHS and other health bodies note that for women with PCOS who are overweight, losing even a small amount of weight can improve symptoms and lower the risk of long-term problems. Regular activity and a balanced diet help, whatever your weight.
How natural care may help
- Diet therapy. Balanced, regular meals with protein, vegetables, pulses and whole grains, and fewer refined carbohydrates and sugary foods. See Weight Management.
- Yoga and activity. A regular practice combined with walking or strength work. See Yoga Therapies.
- Stress and sleep care. Breathing, relaxation and a steady routine. See Mental Well-Being & Sleep Care.
- Routine guidance. Regular sleep and meal times, inspired by the Ayurvedic daily routine. See our dinacharya guide.
What the research says
Lifestyle change (diet, physical activity and, where needed, weight loss) is recommended as a first-line part of PCOS care in international guidelines. Some small studies suggest yoga may help with symptoms such as stress and menstrual regularity, but more research is needed. Natural care at Arogyam Sutra is complementary. Please keep seeing your doctor, keep taking prescribed medicines, and tell the clinic about every medicine and supplement you take.
